I’m a crap blogger.

OK. I screwed up. Yesterday, I promised to provide part two of my how-to’s for mobile/local web. Today. Except, I can’t. Not because I don’t want to, but because I think it’s an important topic that’s worth doing justice to. And I haven’t. Not yet, anyway. I like to keep my day job separate from my writing as a blogger. I think it’s unfair to my employer to talk about the particulars of my job. Not to mention a bad idea to bite the hand that feeds and all that. Truth be told, I love my job. The problem is, sometimes doing the job that pays the bills gets in the way of writing about the type of work that I do. Y’know, what I’m trying to do here. Suffice to say that running an e-commerce company in the travel industry – my day job – doesn’t always leave me as much time to talk about how companies/businesses/brands/individuals can do e-commerce and internet marketing better. Particularly lately. I’m not going to make excuses. The simple fact is I made a promise that I didn’t deliver. And, unfortunately, I’ve done that here more than I care to. For instance, the About page link doesn’t work. For some reason, I can’t get my stupid web host to recognize the .htaccess file that WordPress outputs to make the link work. I know it’s something I’m doing wrong, but I’ll be damned if I can sort out what it is. Also, the design of my blog is kind of crappy. I thought I’d redesign it after I’d built a level of traffic that I passed some months ago. And yet, here we are. You deserve better. Here’s what I intend to do about it. Next week, I’ll post part two of my mobile web views. Hang with me. I think it’ll be worth it. In the meantime, here’s the action plan for the blog:

  1. Fix the damned About page. If I have to post less frequently to get that done, I will. I believe that my credibility hinges on who I am/what I’ve done. You can find those with a Google search or my LinkedIn, MyBlogLog and Facebook profiles. But you ought to be able to do it here. Fixed. That’s done.
  2. Redesign. I don’t think that will be done until much before the end of September. But at least I’ve said it out loud now. You can hold me to it.
  3. Pull fewer punches. When I’ve done well, it’s because I’ve shared my opinions freely. Just remember, on this blog, I’m speaking for me and me only. My company, board and stakeholders may not share my points of view. And that’s OK.
  4. Connect more. There are so many great sites out there that I depend on. Time to revise the blogroll and share the love. Same with the profiles.

That’s it. Stay tuned. And let me know what you think. Or if you know why I can’t get the About page working…

  1. Great advice for online marketers……

I couldn’t agree with Seth Godin more. Focus on making your product or service great first and the viral bit will take care of itself. For instance, the Blendtec videos are incredibly viral. But, really, they’re just showing how effective t…
