More good news about the growth of the mobile web. Why you should care.

More good news about the growth of the mobile web. Why you should care.

Hot on the heel’s of last week’s news about daily mobile web browsing, a new report on TechCrunch says the iPhone makes up 50 percent of smartphone web traffic. And Google’s Android is already at 5 percent. The numbers are growing. And fast.

Long-time FOT Mike Moran has stated the pay-as-you-go style of charging for mobile web depresses use. As Mike notes,

“…as long as carriers are charging by the minute or the megabyte, or have some limit to the amount that you can use before the whopper charges kick in, people will be careful about how much they browse on their cell phones.”

And, I think he’s right. Despite that, demand is growing. (Who knows what it would be if carriers switched to “all-you-can-eat”). Anyway, the news about the growth of mobile has piled up for the last several years. Now it’s time to do something about it.

Why?

According to comScore, here are the 5 fastest growing categories of mobile web use:

  1. Accessing news and information, up 107%
  2. Social networking, up 427% (!!!)
  3. Financial information, up 188%
  4. Movie information, up 185%
  5. Business directories, up 161%

Do these matter to your business? I suspect they do. Number 5 does for sure. The real question is, are you ready for the mobile web?
