Despite – or, potentially because of – their increasing popularity, some companies ban access to social networks. Does yours? Should they?

Currently, my company does not and if they do ban them I’ll be the first to start shouting. Why? Two quick thoughts:

1. Social Networks are a great way to keep up with what your customers are talking about – and it might be you.
2. Companies need to engage in the conversation and social networks are a driving factor.

No argument from me, Chris. The question is, how do you convey the utility of social networks to “old school” management who see them as nothing more but productivity drains for their twenty-something newhires? I suspect that point of view will change over time; I just know too many folks for whom it’s a reality. What’s to do?
