David Chilton's The Wealthy Barber is, simply put, the best personal finance book I've ever read. If you read only one book about managing your finances, this should be it.
One Up On Wall Street, written by Fidelity Investments vice-chairman Peter Lynch, is another simple and enjoyable book that explains some common-sense rules for picking stocks. Well worth the investment.
Now, if you're ready for some heavier material, you've got to check out the works of the master. For my money, Benjamin Graham wrote two of the greatest books on the stock market ever published. The first, the 1973 edition of The Intelligent Investor updated with commentary by Forbes writer Jason Zweig, is the premier work for people interested in understanding investing in the stock market and just might be the best book ever written on the topic. Graham's other landmark book, Security Analysis: The Classic 1934 Edition is the definitive text on the subject. At 700+ single-spaced pages, it's not for the faint of heart. It is strongly recommended, though. Not only by me, but by Peter Lynch and his mentor, Warren Buffett.
Speaking of Mr. Buffet, his Owner's Manual, on the Berkshire Hathaway site is a terrific read outlining some basic strategies and philosophies for anyone interested in owning stocks. Plus, it's completely free. Anytime a billionaire wants to give you free advice, I'd take it.
