So how many adults really use social media? Does it matter?

Sarah Perez at Read/Write Web points to a study claiming half of U.S. adults use social media (the original Media Post report is here). While an update to Sarah’s post notes the study covered emerging media – not just social – the trend is the important thing. The number of adults who have never sent a text fell by 16%. Adults who blog have doubled across all demographics. Instant messaging has grown by 144%. These are huge shifts. Ignoring the social web, the mobile web and the local web risks hurting your business in the long-term. As William Gibson famously said, “The future is already here. It’s just not evenly distributed.” Time to get onboard.
